What is App Routing in Sonar?
App Routing lets you send an app’s audio to a specific Sonar channel instead of using your default audio output.
For example, you can send:
- Your game to the Game channel
- Discord voice chat to the Chat channel
- Music to the Media channel
Why use app routing?
App Routing gives you more control over your audio loadout. You can customize each app or game separately for example, adding more bass to your music or using a Sonar preset for your favorite game or your favorite movie app!
How to do app routing?
In Sonar, each output channel shows apps that are currently playing or capturing audio. Just drag an app from its current channel and drop it into the channel you want.
Heads-up: Apps that play audio cannot be moved to the Mic channel. That channel is reserved for apps that capture your microphone.
Why is my app name displayed incorrectly in Sonar?

Why is my app still displayed in Sonar when there is no more sound playing?
Some apps do not correctly report when they have stopped playing audio. In other cases, Sonar may need a little time to update the app’s status.
Why doesn’t app routing work?
- Some apps are built in a way that prevents other software from changing their audio routing. When that happens, you will need to change the audio output directly in that app’s own settings.
Known apps with routing issues
Some apps are known to have issues with routing. For example if you do the routing of iTunes to another Sonar Channel from Sonar or Windows, it won't be taken in account until you close and restart iTunes. Until that the app in Sonar will be displayed in the original Sonar Channel.
Another example is Discord. It generates two audio sessions:
One routable for everything about activities in channels by default in Game Channel
One non routable for Voice channels in Chat Channel
Why do I have signal in Sonar channel but I don’t see any application assigned in the routing panel?
Some audio sources are hidden from the App Routing panel to keep the list clean and avoid clutter.
For example, audio from Windows test sounds, Sonar, or Moments sound processing may show signal in a Sonar channel without appearing as an app you can route.
How to remove an app from a Sonar Channel?
Apps listed under Apps to be routed are sending audio directly to a device instead of going through Sonar.
To move them, open the Windows Volume Mixer and select the output device you want the app to use. Once it is routed through a Sonar device, you can manage it from Sonar’s App Routing panel.
